Underage Drinking Stats

One day, a street musician stood at the entrance to the metro "L'Enfant Plaza in Washington, DC.

was a very cold morning in January.

The violinist was playing for 45 minutes. He began with Bach, then the "Ave Maria" by Schubert, Manuel Ponce and followed with Massenet and finally Bach again.

was 8 in the morning rush hour. They spent hundreds of people at him, almost all the way from their jobs.

A few minutes later, a man noticed elderly musicians. Slowed, stopped a few seconds, and resumed his way. A minute later, the musician received a first dollar, without stopping, a woman threw a ticket to the box of the violin. Soon after, a man stopped a moment to listen, but looking at his watch, he walked back quickly, it was getting late.

The increased attention that was a boy about 4 years. His mother caught him and pulled him, but little was listening. Finally, his mother grabbed him tight and kept walking. The child, while walking, still looking musician head back.

During the 45 minutes that the musician was playing, there were only 7 people who stopped to listen, but all very briefly.

In total, scraped together $ 32! No one looked when the musician stopped playing. Nobody clapped. Among the thousand people who walked past him, nobody recognized him.

Nobody noticed that the player was Joshua Bell, one of the best violinists in the world.

subway In the hallways played some of the most difficult scores ever written, and all this ... with a Stradivarius of 1713 valued at $ 3.5 million!

For if it seems impossible you

Two days before these events, there were no tickets on sale for their concert at the theater in Boston ... Although cost nearly $ 100!

this incognito performance of Joshua Bell in the subway station was organized by the Washington Post to investigate the perception, taste and priorities of the people.

These were the questions: Can

in an everyday environment and an unusual time, to appreciate beauty?

Are we would stop to appreciate?

Can we recognize the talent in an unusual context?

One possible conclusion of the experiment might be:
If we do not stop a few seconds to listen to one of the best musicians in the world when you are playing one of the most beautiful scores, how many other extraordinary things every day we will be losing by not to appreciate?

In case you want to enjoy your Ave Maria

I hope that in 2011 you are able to perceive all the talent and beauty around you ...

... And all that you have both.

I embrace.
